Property Tax Increase
The recent property tax increase in Vineyard has placed a heavy burden on hardworking families, middle-class residents, and seniors living on fixed incomes. Owning a home is already challenging, especially for young families trying to put down roots, and higher taxes only make it more difficult. The city claimed this increase was to fund public safety, particularly the new fire station, but it also highlights a larger issue—our city doesn’t have a strong enough tax base. Without more commercial businesses contributing to city revenue, homeowners are left carrying too much of the financial load.
Instead of relying on tax hikes, Vineyard should focus on attracting businesses and expanding our tax base so that we don’t have to keep placing the burden on residents. At the same time, we must ensure that city funds are being spent wisely and efficiently. That means prioritizing responsible infrastructure investments and avoiding unnecessary expenses like taxpayer-funded development tours around the world.
I believe in fiscal responsibility. When budget challenges arise, government should first look for ways to be more efficient, attract businesses, and generate revenue without putting more pressure on homeowners. Vineyard must grow its commercial sector to strengthen our tax base, ensuring that essential services are funded without forcing residents to shoulder an unfair burden. My priority will always be to keep Vineyard affordable—working together as a community to find solutions that lower property taxes and create a strong financial future for everyone.
